Nearly 2,000 books collected for children with special needs at Oakwood’s Center for Exceptional Families

Dearborn, Mich. – Dec. 14, 2010 - Children with special needs and their families from the Oakwood Center for Exceptional Families were the recipients of nearly 2,000 books today as a result of a book drive led by St. Frances Cabrini middle school students. Detroit Lions safety John Wendling joined students and faculty in presenting the books to representatives from Oakwood Healthcare.

“Two months ago, my 6th grade class wanted to undertake a community service project for the holidays and we wanted to do something that emphasized the importance of reading,” said Darin Kerr, middle school teacher, St. Frances Cabrini. “We were inspired by the work at the Oakwood Center for Exceptional Families and we are so thrilled to be able to provide a selection of books for this amazing program.”

Oakwood’s Center for Exceptional Families is a medical home for children with special needs and their families. They will be using the books to add to their in-house library, and newer books will be used as gifts in special holiday baskets for the many needy families who visit the Center.

“A gift of books helps the children and teenagers who come to the Center for services,” said Brian Connolly, president and CEO, Oakwood Healthcare. “They can practice the reading skills learned at school – and the books received today let them know that they have friends everywhere in the community.” For more information about the Oakwood Center for Exceptional Families, visit www.oakwood.org/cef
